Unlike a continuous stream, this content is closely linked to specific candidates and the election timeline, and often increases in volume as the election day approaches. This surge can overwhelm automation models, which might not have sufficient high-quality examples in advance to prepare and ensure accuracy.
Furthermore, the training data must be diverse, covering a range of languages, cultures, and perspectives, to ensure that the algorithms are both fair and accurate. If the training data does not accurately represent the full spectrum of content the algorithms will encounter, there is a risk that automated systems may reinforce biases and make decisions lacking the nuanced judgment of a human moderator. Humans are more astute at detecting when content is being disproportionately flagged, especially when it involves marginalized communities sharing their experiences. For example, both people of color and LGBTQ+ users have experienced that their content is more likely to be flagged as sexual in nature when it is not actually policy violating.
In essence, AI algorithms can only be as impartial as the data they are trained on; biased or unrepresentative data can lead to biased outcomes.
